Every new year we take the time to reflect on the past year, re-evaluate our business model, and come up with goals and ways to take our business and blog to the next level. It’s a great opportunity to update our readers on our ever-evolving business model, and this year was really an exceptional one for us! Last year’s efforts to educate past, current, and future clients on what we are all about by designing T-shirts to wear on installation and event days, updating our business cards, creating promotional materials for the holidays, and working with a web designer to showcase many of our favorite projects on our website’s portfolio pages really paid off because this year we were able to book the types and caliber of projects we always knew we would. Not to mention, we hired a social media expert to make sure our IG game was on point as well as were able to work on many projects that give back to the community in different ways! In our personal lives, Tami made it through year one of motherhood and will be adding her second daughter to the “girl crew” in just a few short weeks. Lauren’s twin girls thrived in their preschool class and her oldest, Ava, is now a proficient reader and in first grade. She has continued designing her own Modern Bohemian Home (as we all know personal projects usually take the most time). To say that we have been busy is an understatement, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

As this is officially our first post of 2020, we thought what better way to start the new year than to re-cap the past year’s worth of posts; Interior Design (Lauren’s side), Event Planning (Tami’s side), personal projects, collaborations, and monthly inspiration. We continue to post every Wednesday and Friday and try to keep the content of our blog as focused as possible on the two sides of our business. We have introduced our readers into our lives as well as our creative passions, and have given monthly previews for what is to come and recaps of our “Favorite Five” things we have done or begun! 

Here’s a look at what we have accomplished this past year, the different types of posts that frequent our blog, and our favorite of each type of post with insight as to how this all works Side by Side:

Interior Design – This has been the best year yet for the Interiors “side” of our business. Lauren has been very lucky to have worked on lots of different types of projects including the Bel Air home that Kim and Kanye built (which is now owned by our client). In addition, she has been referred for many other high end projects by a top Brentwood realtor to take his client’s homes to the next level … Oh, and have we mentioned we both flew on a private jet up to Vail to begin the design of our client’s ski home? Everything from design consultation to full construction and remodel as well as Interior Design mostly in high end residential but also in commercial spaces have been a part of the every day on the interiors “side” this year. We truly have loved every minute of seeing each stunning vision come to life and are so grateful for having this platform to showcase our work. In the past, we have shared inspiration boards and various stages of construction in order to show what is in the works, and this year we are proud to say that we finally have finished photos to share. One such project, that you have seen from the very beginning stages (over two years in the making), is what we call the “Modern with Antiques Home”. We have chosen to showcase Lauren’s favorite finished space, the master bathroom, from this home tour today (as seen in our previous post, Modern With Antiques Master Bathroom). It is pure perfection and took a lot of planning to get to where it is! In the coming months and year, amazing projects in the works will be finishing up. We promise to share every detail! New projects are beginning, and we plan to continue to take on interior challenges and new opportunities as they present themselves to us … Stay tuned!

Event Planning – As we have mentioned, here at Side by Side Design we have two “sides” to our business, Interior Design and Event Planning. Our mission is to work with a family to design their home making it fit their lifestyle and personal taste. When assisting these clients with their home event planning, we not only get to continue to work with them Side by Side but get to pull from the look of their home for inspiration. Tami runs this side of the business and has taken on larger events such as weddings and Bar / Bat Mitzvahs as well in the past, but this year has really worked hard to focus on our mission of planning home events. Each event we have planned has been amazing, and we love exposing ourselves to various types of themes, clients, and design challenges. Every time we start a project it is different, new, and exciting (even if it is for an already existing client in a home we know well)! We love to come up with new concepts and ways of surprising our clients and their guests each time. Can you believe that last year we had a total of two events in twelve months, and this year we have had at least two events to plan every single month? To say we have come a long way is a total understatement. We are projecting 2020 to be even more busy, and we have been lucky to book many events already (even with Tami’s temporary shift in focus to her new baby coming right at the beginning of the year)! The event we would like to showcase is a very special one. It promised to be “the first of many” and has proved that one small project can turn into a lasting relationship with an events client that we absolutely love working with. It was a very special day (as seen in our previous post, Rosè Mom’s Day) in honor of a group of mamas, and with every detail on point will be remembered by those who attended and our amazing vendors too! We feel very fortunate that this client has continued to hire us almost every month to do something for them. Each and every project they throw our way keeps us on our toes and gets us excited, and we are most looking forward to their daughter’s Bat Mitzvah that we are already planning for October 2020. 

Holidays – Wow! Every year at this time, we set a goal of growing in this area and bringing holiday cheer into our clients homes. It has been a dream of ours that we have worked to communicate properly in order for our existing and potential clients to understand that we are not just a traditional Interior Design firm. That our mission is to design beautiful spaces and dress them up for events and holidays too. Last year, with the help of our social media, beautifully designed promotional materials, and blog posts to promote our holiday services, we booked our first Christmas and New Years clients. This year, coming up on the holiday season, we set our goals even higher and had even bigger dreams of growing in this area, hoping to create memorable experiences for our clients at all holiday times (including table centerpieces, home decor, festive food and treats, gift wrap and planning everything from intimate family dinner parties to extravagant themed soirees). The holiday season has now come to an end, and now that we have a second to breathe, we can share that it was AMAZING! We planned the most memorable company holiday party for one of our clients bringing in top LA vendors, festive decor, and fun entertainment (as seen in our previous post, A Company Holiday Party), created an overall look for corporate and personal holiday gifts and gift wrap (times six), and consulted on the decor and set up of a very fancy New Year’s Eve country club (members only) event. I mean … How will we even top all of that next year?

Personal Projects – Although we have lots of amazing vendors we work Side by Side with, we have been known to create many things ourselves (especially for personal projects). Everything from flower arrangements, to gift wrap, to handmade invitations have been showcased here on our blog. The event we are highlighting is a true marriage of the two. Not only did we (Well, really only Lauren and our sister tribe) create personal touches for a “Sprinkle” celebrating Tami’s new baby-to-be (as seen in our previous post, Sprinkled Pink), but she also used our resources to their fullest by utilizing some of what our favorite vendors have to offer to plan for the planner. Tami and her guests loved arriving and getting to see each carefully placed detail. This year, we will continue sharing personal projects on our blog (i.e. birthday parties for our girls and our soon to be sister-in-law’s bridal shower) because we love getting to look back on these special milestones and how we create for our loved ones, and hope you do too!

Collaborations – This year, we have continued to prioritize gaining new perspective from other professionals (whether it be by listening to podcasts, reading articles, or creating our own “Mompreneurs group” that meets every couple of months to discuss business related topics, troubleshoot issues we are having, and be a source of support and collaboration). All of this adds so much to our personal growth and the growth of our business as well as the way we picture it in the future. We are excited to find opportunities to collaborate on special projects with other amazing businesses this coming year! We have been very lucky this year to work collaboratively with many amazing companies including: bryck&mortar, Rachel Miriam, Molly Sims, baby2baby, Amanda Rose Florals, Panik Ryder, Wilma and Ethel, Brass Street Booth, Plate Fit, Le Pain Quotidien, Squeeze, Hey Day, Cosbar, Voyage LA, Lincoln, Heartcraft Girl, JCJ, and all the mompreneurs. We especially loved getting the opportunity of working with the mamas in this photo to put together a really special event for Mother’s Day (as seen on our previous post, Treat Yourself Mother’s Day Pop Up Event)! #inspo – This consists of two different series … The first is our seasonal “Pining for Pinterest” post. Four times a year, we share what is “pinspiring” each of us going into the upcoming season (as seen on our post Pining For Pinterest: Fall 2019). Each look highlights our exact business model in showcasing an event that works with an interior space as well as all of the details you would find there (signature cocktails, home accessories, delicious catered appetizers, and so much more). By creating these boards, we are hoping to inspire those of you who are hosting parties in your near future or those looking to do something new with their home. This gives us a chance to post what’s inspiring us each month and give a preview of what’s to come as well as really let our readers into our lives. Our readers enjoy our monthly “Get Inspired” posts so much that a few years ago, we began writing and sourcing for our second part monthly “Get Inspired” posts where we fill readers in on where to get some of the fun home and event items they see on our blog.  Check back this Friday (January 3rd) for all new looks and inspiration for the New Year.

We truly can’t believe our business (and blog) have been around almost a decade! We are extremely proud of the growth we have made in this time. In fact, when we began Side by Side Design, the blog was the main focus (as we both had other full time jobs, and we were looking for a way to share our creative side with others). We have since shifted our focus. Our blog is not a main source of business. It is more our way to document the projects we are working so hard on. We feel it is important to say this as we always strive to be transparent with our readers and want you to see that although we love our blog (We wouldn’t continue writing for so long if not), for us, we are able to love it even more this way. We so appreciate our loyal readers and plan to give all of you really exciting interior design and event planning related blog posts each Wednesday and Friday in 2020. If you have been following our story for a while, we would love for you to give us some feedback … What keeps you coming back? Any constructive criticism is welcome as well!

As we mentioned, we are happy to have content for our blog, but even happier to have a business that is coming off of its best year yet! In order to continue to grow in the next year, we have really worked hard to come up with a short list of very tangible goals for our business that we will be working to achieve this year.

Our New Year Resolutions for 2020 are …

  • We have upped our social media game in the last three months by hiring a professional to consult on each post / edit photos and we are very happy with how our IG feed looks and the feedback we are getting. In addition, we love our “Designer Day!” series on Instastories! Our goal is to be more scheduled on social media by posting one of these “stories” each week to share a day in the life of a Side by Side designer as well as add content to our feed every Wednesday and Friday to go along with what is being posted on our blog.
  • Our seasonal newsletter provides past, current, and potential clients with information (about four times a year) about the services we provide. Most of the time this is based on the upcoming season (i.e. creating a look for the decor in your home at holiday times that coordinates with your existing design), but is not limited to only event services. Our goal is to continue listening to what our community is asking for to meet their interior and event needs as well as focus on creating opportunities to collaborate with high end vendors throughout the seasons and at holiday times.
  • Last year, we updated the portfolio on our website to showcase our most recent and most beautiful projects. We now have many more interior and event spaces to add. Continuing to add to these portfolio pages is a priority for us as we know it will give the full picture of what we are creating. We will make sure that all areas of our website are updated with information that is current and have professional photos taken of our work to really show it to its fullest.
  • We will continue to take on projects that fit our business model and the standard we have set for ourselves while keeping our clients happy and impressed with our work.
