Buckle your seat belts! We are about to take you on a wild ride through the most epic Bat Mitzvah party we have ever experienced (and were lucky enough to plan) … If you have been following along on this Glossara. journey with us, you know by now that our goal in reimagining the space at Viceroy Santa Monica included unveiling one area at a time creating elements of surprise throughout the entire evening. Their outdoor space lent itself to such a huge transformation as well as endless entertainment possibilities.

This gorgeous patio was the absolute best location for our client’s Bat Mitzvah party. It was outdoor and spacious while still feeling intimate. Of course, we could have easily kept it exactly as is, but what’s fun about that!? Wait ’til you see the crazy transformation this space underwent. Not only did we replace almost every single piece of outdoor furniture that lives here, but we added in tons of lighting, florals, and some custom details (big and small) that will blow your mind!

We decided to keep the overall look for this space super crisp, modern, and mostly white with pops of pink to stay true to the Glossara. theme. Lauren (Owner and Lead Interior Designer of Side by Side Design) carefully selected these adorable blue chairs as some of the only items from the Viceroy’s every day design to stay in the space.

There were two major design elements that we knew we absolutely needed to have (but that would also need to be custom). The first was this incredible floral filled stage and backdrop, and if you look closely at the before and after photos you will notice the tile surround on the firepit no longer has a pattern. Not only did Nomad Art and Design custom build the stage, but they carefully crafted pink tile to wrap around the firepit so the existing pattern would not clash with our overall design.

The backdrop for this stage was an original design by the very talented Kayla of Gathered. We absolutely fell in love with the way she paired the soft pink with a textured iridescent, and loved even more seeing her vision brought to life. These stunning florals were her design too! We truly cannot say enough about this gorgeous mix of pinks and orangey-red. Each cluster took our breath away!

Sorry not sorry that it was wayyy too hard to select from all the awesome photos Scott Clark took!

We carefully selected each piece of furniture to use in this space from Signature Party Rentals wide selection of rentals. We decided to go with a very clean, crisp, modern aesthetic and used tables for seating and hightop tables that looked great without any linens at all. We also knew that this overall white backdrop would be beautiful in daylight but would take on a whole new look when the sun went down and all the pink lighting we brought in was in full effect.

Speaking of lighting, this photo shows some of the pops of pink starting to do their thang! The overhead string lights that are in this space year round were such an added bonus too!

Pops of pink in plush fabric pillows made a huge statement too!

In our planning process, various different set ups were imagined in this space. We went through many scenarios as well for sit down dinner type events and scenarios where guests were standing and mingling the whole time. A marriage of the two was where we landed. Seating was provided for those who prefer to sit while enjoying their dinner, lounge seating for those who want even more comfort than that, and hightop tables also to rest a drink while guests mingled. A little something for everyone! Stations of all kinds of cuisine were created and set up by Viceroy Santa Monica. Both the menu and service were top notch!

Have you ever seen such beauty? We asked Kayla of Gathered to create centerpieces for these tables that left space for guests to enjoy a meal but did not leave the tables looking sparse as full table settings were not necessary for this type of dining experience. What she designed were little slices of heaven! Each centerpiece is slightly different and totally unique to anything we have ever seen before at any event we have planned or attended. Instead of placing florals in low vases to feel as if they are sitting on the table itself, she custom made textured risers for the arrangements to sit on (in pink, of course!).

The other idea we had for how to best use the functionality of this space was for each of the cabanas to house a different activity for the kids to partake in.

Here’s a look into one of the cabanas that was used as a lounge and activity space for the Bat Mitzvah girl and her friends. We love the custom signage with photos from her photo shoot with Scott Clark and pink shag carpet by Nomad Art and Design. We especially love the intimate setting this cabana provided for Untouchable Events to host a round of trivia about the Bat Mitzvah girl during the event itself …

… You can’t have a Glossara. themed event without Glossier product. We packaged up cute mini BOXes of Glossier lip glosses, cloud paint, etc. and some with other goodies the Bat Mitzvah girl loves (such as Starbucks gift cards and pink pop sockets) to use as prizes for games.

We made sure to have a little something for the littles in attendance too! Pink sungalsses, pop-its and even smiley stickers to go along with the theme.

Pink ping pong? Anything is possible! Nomad Art and Design took the design of our arcade space beyond serious and not only brought in a pink ping pong table for guests to play the game but they custom created these Glossara. paddles and balls that read “Sara. Sara. Sara.”

The ping pong set up and air hockey table from Arcade Rentals by Gems in this space was a nice extension of the arcade from our cocktail hour set up (as seen in our previous post) when the doors were opened up. Guests were able to use the entire arcade space during the dinner portion of this event.

Now that you have seen all the behind the scenes, it’s time for the main event! As we mentioned, we did our best to keep areas of the party hidden for as long as possible to create an element of surprise. How did we accomplish this? Lots and lots of pipe and drape! When it was time for the cocktail hour and a half to end and the dinner portion of the evening to begin, we found ourselves on either side of the curtains pulling them back and tried to take in the guests reactions to the space. We aren’t going to lie … Their excitement made us very very happy!

These three dancers were ready to greet all the guests as they entered the space (We should mention the girls are twins, wink.). Their energy was unmatched throughout the entire rest of the night! Thank you Untouchable Events for bringing us a taste of New York right here in LA!

The DJ and emcee (also from Untouchable Events) were ready to bring the party to the next level!

Did we mention how good the decor looked as the sun went down and the pink lights were in full effect? Not only did we want to keep each area a surprise until it was time to reveal, but our vision was for the energy to build in each space and the shades of pink to get more and more vibrant too!

The interactive models from our cocktail hour made an appearance as well …

… Before changing their look completely to match the new space they were in.

This event was planned out to be free flow where guests could eat when they wanted, visit the cabanas when they wanted to engage in an activity, and there was also plenty of entertainment. This violinist played a few sets of her rendition of modern hit songs. Anything we say here will not do her justice. We wish everyone reading could experience listening to her play and the energy her music brought to the space. It was pure magic!

Our L shaped stage was the perfect place for a cirque du soleil type performance as well! You can do that too, right?…

… and the incredible mentalist, Asi Wind, dazzled guests with roaming performances and a show from the big stage.

Each cabana housed a different activity such as this “Chill Here” station with a custom sign pointing inside for what you would find.

Other activities included “Lips + Lashes” by Vita Perfetta where guests could go to get flutter lashes applied or create their own custom gloss …

… “Acai Bowls” to customize a delicious treat …

… and the “Slides Station” to create something fun for their feet!

The fact that we have this photo of the two of us both sitting and apparently enjoying a little something to eat and drink is definitely a blur! This event was jam packed full of excitement (just like we like it) and for the absolute best of the best clients we could ask for! Believe it or not, there’s still more to share. Next up … After party! Stay tuned!

PINK IS A NEUTRAL. and this one might just be our most favorite space of all! Before we even get started … Special shout out to Invite Amy who imagined and created all the goodies in this Glossara. swag shop and Nomad Art and Design and Gathered for transforming this space completely and bringing our all pink vision to life! Here are all the details:

As we mentioned in previous Glossara. posts, one of our main goals for this very special weekend packed full of events was to unveil spaces and details by keeping them hidden or put away until it was time for them to have their moment. The swag shop was one we felt the most strongly about having a MOMENT! However, we hinted at its location by posting custom signage by Nomad Art and Design.

This library at Viceroy Santa Monica was the staging ground for our very own Glossara. swag shop. There is a door on either side of this small room that we were able to keep closed for the weekend with signage out front stating that the “Swag shop was under construction.” Our team at Nomad Art and Design came in two full days before the big Bat Mitzvah night and began preparing this room. It was a complete transformation including bringing in faux walls, taking out the rug, replacing all furniture, and creating shelving for each piece of swag to be properly showcased.

When you want something done right, bring in the professionals! Did we mention, Nomad Art and Design has a highly skilled team of craftsman who built all of our custom backdrops and sets for the weekend as well as set designers who got our vision to a T? Down to the smallest of vases, accessories, and even pink pens and other office supplies to be used in this space.

Here it is! Honestly, seeing this swag shop in photos (by Scott Clark Photography) gives us chills! It’s hard to believe that this space was created to be used for only one night. It could easily be a pop up store that many guests visit or a set used for a show. It was made that professionally and finished off so right!

Ummm what do we even say about these florals by our girl Kayla at Gathered? The blush and nude tones are absolute perfection, and they seem to be popping up in all the right places! Cute branded candy bags were closed off with smiley face stickers, but it was the presentation of all of these little details that really stole the show!

Let’s talk about these counters! They are tufted and gorgeous rentals from our go-to Signature Party Rentals, but also the perfect place to house acrylic trays full of candy, the official card box, and just behind the counter … Some space to keep bags full of swag for guests to pick up as they left the party. It was really important to us (along with the entire build-out team), to not only make this space beautiful but to completely think through the functionality of how it would be used.

Now for the moment you have all been waiting for … You can’t have a swag shop without mass amounts of swag! Each custom Glossara. sweatshirt, hat, reusable shopping bag, lollipop, water bottle, and candy bag was designed and produced by Invite Amy! We have said it before and will say it again. She is a genius and the absolute BEST in creating graphics and custom swag for mitzvahs and more! We are beyond lucky to have had her New York elevated style as such an integral part of this entire event and to have her as a friend and sounding board for all things creative!

The Glossara. logo (imagined and created by Invite Amy) was seen in so many details in our Glossara. swag shop including these adorable bags full of all pink candy. When planning events, our goal is to always be innovative and come up with new ideas we haven’t seen before. For example, we thought and thought about how to a) provide a “candy bar” during Covid (meaning the candy we put out really should all be individually wrapped), and b) do something slightly different than the now traditional “candy bar”. You’ve seen it, right? The apothecary jars full of one colored candy with scoops to make your own take home treat bag? Shout out to team member Stephen for coming up with these individually packed mini bags of candy that were not just a fresh take on the “candy bar” concept but also super adorable!

These custom arches and shelving were the perfect place to display swag. The signage in this space was on point as well!

Here’s a closer look at the swag itself …

Many of the details for the Bat Mitzvah weekend were not only a surprise for the guests but for the family and Bat Mitzvah girl herself. However, one thing she felt very strongly about was sweatshirts! Invite Amy made two … Pink crew neck with white text and white zip up hoodies with black text. Both had this adorable hand and smiley graphic on the front that the Bat Mitzvah girl asked for specifically! What a great detail, and we were of course thrilled to see her vision come to life!

This white on white Glossara. hat is one of our favorites, face masks are a must have right now, and these branded lollipops are almost too beautiful to eat!

We loved being able to showcase different looks (selected by stylist Jessica Culotti) in different areas of this event. We knew this would be the case when we scheduled the pre-event photo shoot with Scott Clark, but had no idea the photos would be this spectacular! Even the pink arches in the background (at our photo shoot spot – Festoon LA) fit so perfectly with the arches in this space. The whole experience was magic!

OK, now let’s talk about the process … As guests entered this swag shop, not only were they greeted by yet another adorable poster by Nomad Art and Design, but by hanging reusable branded bags to gather all their desired swag.

Guests could browse (as they would in any shop) for their sizes and what they specifically wanted to take home.

Our two swag shop attendants (dressed of course in Glossara. swag) were there to assist as well …

… and to make things even more organized, we created this alphabetized filing system for our attendants to use to find each guests personalized shopping card.

The cards were a great way to keep tabs on what went in each guest’s swag bag. They were attached to the bag at the end of the guest’s visit in the swag shop and were a way to help identify who’s bag belonged to whom when guests returned to pick them up before exiting the party. I told you, we thought of everything!

HUGE shout out to Maya and Stephen who not only worked the swag shop on the night of the Bat Mitzvah but were with us every step of the way throughout the weekend to help make each space look polished and each event run smoothly! We could not have done it without you!

We know we said in our last post, that the dinner part of the evening was up next, but we had to take a quick detour into the swag shop first. Just couldn’t wait! Plus it really needed its own post! Up next … The dinner party (we swear this time)!

If you have been following along … Here’s where our Glossara. themed Bat Mitzvah experience gets really good!
As we mentioned, many guests were in town for the weekend and called Viceroy Santa Monica their home base. For us, these past two years of planning has truly bonded us to this amazing hotel and their beyond dedicated staff … But it goes way deeper than that! Did you know, when we selected this location (over all the awesome venues LA has to offer), that they were preparing to undergo a major renovation? Pre-covid, we met with our contact at the Viceroy and actually had to sign an NDA in order to see the plans for their new design. Kinda cool to be amongst the first in on the plan! We then based our entire concept for the original Bat Mitzvah theme on a space we only saw in render form. Meanwhile, due to Covid, the Bat Mitzvah got pushed back an entire year from its original date, and as the Bat Mitzvah girl was now coming up on her fourteenth birthday, her interests changed, and thus so did the theme!

The new design at Viceroy Santa Monica is fresh, current, and makes us feel right at home, but one thing we noticed right away was that in order to accomplish the complete look we had envisioned, most of the furniture would need to be replaced and many of the walls and some of the flooring too! We can truly say that watching this space completely transform into the world that we created is honestly one of the most fulfilling things we have done in our career so far!

Here’s a crazy story … The first time we walked through the hotel after the renovation was complete we were confronted with our biggest challenge. This very large, very heavy bench! It is stunning and such a showstopper of a piece for the Viceroy’s every day occurrences, however it did not work with our event’s aesthetic. As we mentioned, it is VERY heavy, so moving it was not an option. What did we do? We began to hatch a plan to build an asymmetrical table that would cover it entirely. We are pretty sure the guys giving us the walk through thought we were nuts when we mentioned that we were considering this, but …

… It worked! Huge thanks to the Viceroy for trusting us and our vision and the beyond talented team at Nomad Art and Design for taking this idea and running with it! The table fit like a glove and was the perfect stopping point once guests entered on the “pink carpet” for pre set cocktails and pink wrapped sushi galore!

The other thing we knew right away when we began planning this event was that we wanted guests to enjoy the part of the evening they were in thoroughly before moving into the next space / part of the event. We wanted to keep next areas hidden and unveil them as the evening unfolded. This was not an easy task (especially when the majority of guests were staying in the venue for the entire weekend). The lobby area was where the night’s festivities began with cocktail hour (and a half).

Not sure how the venue felt about us turning the inside of their hotel pink LOL, but we had tons of fun planning out which furniture would stay (not much), which we would swap it out for (Thanks Signature!), and overall creating a cleaner blush toned palette for our event to live in.

White leather couches and ottomans and blush velvet seating areas from Signature Party Rentals were great additions to this lounge space …

… and the perfect finishing touches? Pillows in every shade of pink, tons of floral arrangements by Gathered, and printed canvases from our Bat Mitzvah girl’s pre-party photo shoot with photographer extraordinaire Scott Clark!

Another thing we knew we “needed” for this event was an IG corner, and this nook (to the right of the library) was the perfect place to make it happen!

Ummm … Can we say that Nomad Art and Design way over exceeded our expectations in bringing this vision to life! Where do we start?

The neon “like”! That lips couch! The pink painted palms! The custom wall they built to fit perfectly over what normally exists in this space! It was all pure perfection!

HOLD THE PHONE. Oh, and the accessories were on point too!

The Sugar Palm restaurant at Viceroy Santa Monica was completely transformed as well.

A few traditional Bat Mitzvah touches went a long way (as this party was anything but traditional) like this custom Glossara. poster turned sign-in board by Nomad Art and Design. Have we mentioned that Nomad is an MTV VMA award winning team who has worked on music video sets for everyone from Katy Perry to this Bat Mitzvah girl’s idol Ariana Grande! Also, this custom poster was created in the same style as those made for her favorite pop stars! We are beyond lucky to have worked with this team and can’t wait to collab again real soon!

The restaurant we mentioned was turned into a full on arcade for the kids to enjoy during their cocktail hour complete with skeeball and other fun arcade games by Parties by Gems, a mocktail bar serving fun signature pink mocktails, and the most stunning Glossara. wallpaper we could have ever imagined!

As guests arrived they were encouraged to get a cocktail, enjoy New York style appetizers, and visit the “swag shop” (more on that real soon).

We can honestly say that every vendor we worked with on this project completely raised the bar! It was a true team effort and each member brought their own creativity and innovation to this work of art! For example, these interactive models (who changed three times to fit each area of the party perfectly) were brought in and styled by Untouchable Events our mastermind for the evening behind all things sound, lighting, and entertainment.

What’s behind those curtains ladies? Next up … The unveiling of our next space! The dinner portion of the evening!

All photographs were taken by Scott Clark Photography.

Last we checked in on this Glossara. themed Bat Mitzvah experience, We shared all the festivities of that Friday evening. Here’s a recap: cocktail hour at the hotel, tacos margs and more by the beach, and a movie night complete with popcorn and all the fixin’s! Saturday morning commenced with breakfast and …

… adorable custom beach bags (with the tag line – Happy is Cool.) delivered to each guest’s hotel room introducing the day’s activity. Each bag had a Good Vibes. towel inside, Glossier Invisible Shield Suncreen, and a cute hat with a hint at where we would be heading next. Thanks Invite Amy for being our swag guru and creating these awesome bags and towels for each guest to enjoy!

By now, you must know that there are two sides to our business (not just Tami + Lauren) but Interiors + Events. This gorgeous setting happens to not only be our event’s next location but a project we have been working on for the Interiors side as well.

Luxury buses from Go Luxe Limo helped all hotel guests travel in maximum comfort from the beach in Santa Monica to this stunning farm deep in Hidden Valley.

All white pagodas and umbrellas from Signature Party Rentals transformed our space into a party, helped keep the look fresh and clean, and provided even more shade when paired with all the gorgeous trees that live on this land.

Pops of pink helped finish off this look right! These flower arrangements by Gathered were perfectly polished and pink too!

We made sure to have lots of snacks on hand so guests could graze at any point throughout the day. Remember we said Happy is Cool. was the tagline? Eat Happy. works too!

This stunning flower arrangement needed its own moment!

If you’re gonna have a tagline, you might as well put it on the napkins! Right Invite Amy? Cute paper goods are kinda our thing!

“The Farm” club cuz iykyk! Mendocino Farms is one of our favorite go-to spots for quick party sandwiches, salads, and such! They have so much awesome variety, and everything always tastes fresh and delicious too!

Can’t have too many snacks at a time like this!

Lawn games say, “Don’t take this party too serious and have fun”! Some of our favs include giant Jenga, Connect 4 …

… and this custom cornhole with the farm’s very own logo!

If you have been following the progress of the construction on this farm on our IG @sidebysidedesign, you know that we have completed three small cottages and have now moved on to the main house (as seen in this photo). We can’t wait to share details along the way starting with these absolutely perfect lounge chairs we purchased just in time for the party!

Pretty sure this pool is one of the coolest features on the entire property!

Throw in a bunch of custom pink floats by Invite Amy, and you will be ready to Jump Right In.

We added another seating area poolside so guests could spread out and enjoy their time!

Untouchable Events kept the vibe on point …

… and Mr. Bartender kept the beer, wine, and sparkling sodas flowing!

More florals, cuz why not!?

In case guests wanted something a bit more hearty, a pizza oven was brought in and pies were being personalized on the spot. We can’t say enough about Speak Cheezy’s honey chili concoction. It was divine!

For those, who prefer sweet to savory … The Carmela ice cream cart! Ummm fresh mint is our absolute fav!

For entertainment: pool, tennis, hikes on the trail, lawn games, and a ride on this ATV!

We started with party favors and will end with them too! A little farm swag for guests to take home with them goes a long way! Can’t wait to share what’s next from this Glossara. themed Bat Mitzvah experience very soon … It’s finally time to show the big Bat Mitzvah event itself. In fact, it is so big (with so many details) that we have broken it into 4 parts starting with cocktail hour. We promise, you will love every minute of it!

Last we checked in, we shared how our Glossara. themed Bat Mitzvah experience began and left you all in suspense for how this event continued on throughout the weekend … But it goes wayyy past the gifting experiences left in hotel rooms and the cocktail hour guests were invited to after checking in. We took guests off site, saw the city (and country) a bit, and we still have so much to share before even getting to the BIG event itself. This post is dedicated to the welcome events from that Friday night. Enjoy!

Having fun is the point. Right? Blue Plate Taco in Santa Monica was the perfect location for a fun filled welcome dinner for a family that doesn’t take life too seriously and loves good tacos + margs! Plus, from a design perspective, we really didn’t have to do much at all to make this space party ready … Just a few personalized touches and what party doesn’t look better with flowers?

This welcome sign was EVERYTHING! When we showed up on Ocean Ave. with this custom sign ready to go, the venue actually told us they do events all the time and this was the most elaborate piece of decor they had ever seen in their space. Go big or go home! Really though, big props go to Nomad Art and Design for custom creating the sign of our dreams and Gathered for these beyond stunning flower arrangements that finished it off right!

Also by Gathered, the most adorable vases full of flowers to help decorate the tables.

It was the absolute perfect evening for catching up with old friends and spending time with family (and not a bad view of the beach either) …

… Of course you also can’t beat Blue Plate’s chips, salsa, homemade guacamole, and their margs will knock you off your feet!

Having fun REALLY is the point!

That’s not all! Luxury shuttle buses had taken all guests from the hotel to our dinner location and then right back for more fun! Can you guess from this photo what the theme of the after party was?

Movie night! We are very proud of our team for allowing guests to be surprised throughout the entire weekend for what was coming next. That meant strategically planning to transform whole spaces of the hotel while the guests were off site!

The outdoor area outside Viceroy Santa Monica’s Sugar Palm restaurant was the perfect location for our movie night set up. Their already existing string lights and heaters created ambiance and kept everyone comfortable late into the night, and we used one of their cabanas as our concession stand. However, the transformation was made complete with a little help from our friends at Teak and Lace! Everything from these cushions, to the extra large movie screen, and projector too were rented from this awesome company and set up to make this space feel cozy and inviting for our guests!

Can’t have a concession stand without popcorn …

… and all the movie theater candy you could ever want!

Each guest got their own tray of goodies in the event’s color scheme … Custom napkins and popcorn boxes by Invite Amy paired with delicious flavored sodas and Red Vines. Yum!

BONUS!!! The “camp girls” came down in their custom PJ’s ready to fully enjoy this movie night set up! As event planners who strive for perfection in every detail, what more could we ask for? Can’t wait to share so much more from this Glossara. themed Bat Mitzvah experience very soon. Up next … We are headed to The Farm!
