Although this month has been busier than ever, I have found some time here and there to enjoy all that this time of year has to offer including decorating our home, putting together costumes, and visiting our local pumpkin patch. I am beyond excited to take my little kitty cat trick-or-treating tonight! In honor of Joie’s first Halloween, I have included some photos from our trip to Underwood Family Farms for your enjoyment (and because babies + pumpkins are too stinking cute not to share).

Happy Halloween from all of us here at Side by Side Design!

It’s the end of the month, and we are extremely grateful for all of the design challenges and experiences that have come our way. Today, we continue to show you some of our favorites … 5 things that truly made us happy in the great big world of design this month. This has proven to be a great way for us to share sneak peeks into projects that are in the works (but not quite ready to show in their entirety), flashbacks of projects from the past, and highlight an interior or event vendor that deserves recognition. Enjoy!

#1: This girl! We happened to be running early last weekend to a birthday party Ava was invited to, and had just enough time to stop at a furniture store I had been meaning to check out for a client. Not only was Ava surprisingly well-behaved walking around this store but asked me several times to take pictures of her in front of her favorite accessories … This pose though! Ha! (Written by: Lauren)

#2: This trial run! Sometimes you need a good trial run before setting up when hosting. In anticipation of the holidays, I started playing around with our china, most fancy wine glasses, and a few other fun festive touches. This way, when I go to set up for real I will know what works best. Stay tuned for more from our holiday event services coming in the next few months, and if you are in need of a little help this holiday season, we are your girls! Email us at info@sbsdesignla.com for more information and to book one of our remaining dates. (Written by: Tami)

#3: This dining room redo! This client is ready to redo this dining room we created for her several years ago. Just like anything else, taste for design changes and evolves over time. She wants to give it a modern updated look, and I took this as a fun redo challenge. We will be starting this project pretty soon, but in the meantime, I am having fun looking for inspiration and coming up with new ideas. (Written by: Lauren)

#4: This vendor! I took a client shopping last week at Lawrence of La Brea and wound up spending over three hours shopping. There were just too many good things to see! Whether you are looking for an antique soumak, a modern Moroccan berber rug, or a kilim, they have so many great styles in stock, are super friendly to work with, and go out of their way to make sure you are purchasing the right rugs for your space. I highly recommend checking this place out! (Written by:Lauren)

#5: This designer! We are so excited to announce that this month we hired our first employee! Sarah studied Interior Design at FIDM and has been working in the world of design for the past few years. She has even assisted in event projects in the past (Score!). We met Sarah a little while back and have hired her to do some of our drafting work, so we knew exactly where to turn when a position in our business came available! We love her style and her enthusiasm for the world of design! Welcome to Side by Side, Sarah!

We plan to share our “Favorite Five” for the month of November on the 30th, and of course will be sharing what’s inspiring us for the month ahead on the first Friday. See ya soon!

Halloween is our absolute favorite time of year to decorate our living spaces. We both love to add festive touches into our existing decor. Here is a look at what we did last Halloween! In preparing to decorate this year, we once again realized just how truly busy we are and had time to purchase just a few new items, dusted off some of our old favorites, and came up with new (but quick) overall looks. Here’s a peek at how each of us used our different styles to create the right look for our homes and what we have goin’ on this Halloween.

T Side: Apparently, it being Joie’s first Halloween is my excuse for going a little bit overboard this year. I wanted to do it all … craft, create a really fun tablescape, pumpkin shop, and even dress my little one up in a coordinating costume! I’ve been busy making the most adorable black and white scene all for my darling Joie. What’s she dressing up as this year? A black cat! Here are the details (and photos) of our cat inspired Halloween decor …

Just a few black and white touches are found on our coffee table; a few candles, a pumpkin, a ball of string (Don’t cats like playing with those?), a cute sign, and a bowl full of my favorite Halloween “mix”.

My table is set for a fun festive party! Joie has a place to sit too! My new black tablecloth and our everyday dishes make this setting a bit formal while black and white paper napkins are casual and fun.

Yes, I made these buntings! I told you I was in a crafty mood!

Our centerpiece is the white pumpkin we purchased at our family trip to the pumpkin patch last weekend. Don’t you love its disguise?

A kitty cat take home gift is fun too. Meow!

Joie’s highchair is decked out too in all black and white. She loved this mini pumpkin!

These bags are filled with homemade “mix” and are being saved for a special Halloween party Joie and I will attend.

Ok, so a baby photo shoot never really hurt anyone! I think she’s ready to go trick-or-treating for the first time. Don’t you?

L Side: My first time decorating for the holidays in my new home, and I was excited to add some fall touches to my existing decor. Scott and I took the kids to pick out pumpkins last weekend, and we all had fun selecting the most interesting ones we could find. I decided to keep my decor super simple so that it just enhances our Modern Bohemian home.

This fun grouping of multi-colored pumpkins in all different sizes gives my entry bench fall flair.

The kids have been having fun moving the pumpkins all around and creating their own set ups too.

Proud of their pumpkin picks!

I just love these photos of my Cara …

… and all of their personalities truly come out in these individual pictures. Too funny, Sienna!

Ava wanted to pose with the pumpkin she picked out!

I bought this funky role of mudcloth wrapping paper from Cost Plus World Market and used it as my table runner. I love how it ties in the black and white details of my home and still feels festive for this time of year.

As you can see, we each have our own style when it comes to decorating, but we also love to see what each other comes up with. Halloween lends itself to millions of different ways of decorating, so many directions you can go. What is your plan this year? We can’t wait to hear how you decorate your space for Halloween, and of course (as we are very visual gals) we would love to see photos as well. Send them our way!

I am really excited to be sharing this space with all of you today. I have been known to say that a room is never quite complete, and this is true of my master bathroom. Although it is beautiful and it turned out to be everything that I wanted and more, I am dying to add in just one touch of bohemian flair to finish it off. I have been searching high and low for the perfect runner rug to put in front of the sink counter. Not as easy as it sounds, when you want something vintage, cool, a specific size, and with really no color! I will keep my eyes peeled, but until then this bathroom was too beautiful to wait any longer to share.

Before

Who wouldn’t walk in this bathroom on a home tour and run for the hills? It was never a question that the bathrooms in our house would get completely remodeled before we even moved in, and everything (I mean EVERYTHING) would get replaced including all of the pipes underneath! While we were at it, we re-worked the layout and opened up the space to create an even bigger master bathroom even though we took a foot away on one side from our Master Closet

In Process

This was the new layout we came up with removing all excess walls and the tiny closets and creating two much larger and cleaner floor plans …

… and we gave ourselves an even larger shower!

After

Can you believe this is the same space? I absolutely love how my bathroom turned out. It is so me! I love the crisp white cabinets mixed with the marble tile and all of the black metal touches give it just the right amount of edge and masculinity I was looking for and to appease my husband.

My dad built this gorgeous white floating cabinet for us. It gives us just the right amount of storage, but if we need more, we could always tuck some large baskets underneath for extra towels and toilet paper.

A crisp, white quartz countertop installed by Sistone, black industrial faucets by Delta and sourced from BJ Discount, along with my sleek Kohler sink … but the thing I get asked about the most is my over-sized black framed mirror which I had custom made to fit the space. A few accessories keeps the look sleek but also warms it up just a little.

I kept all of the tile the same but used the matte finish on the floor and kept the sheen for the walls. They had an option for a smaller size which I used on the shower floor to create a surface with more traction.

You wouldn’t believe how excited I got when I met with the guy who did my glass shower enclosure. I told him I wanted matte black hardware, and he said that I was in luck. He had just added that option to his line. I just love how it all coordinates and works together!

I know what you are thinking … Do you really need three shower heads? No, but I am not complaining about it either! This set from Delta that I got from BJ Discount is pretty incredible! The one thing that I was super adamant about though was the placement of the valves. I really wanted them directly across from the entry so that you don’t have to get all the way into the shower to turn them on, and I liked the look of insetting them into the shampoo niche so they don’t stick out too much.

To finish off my bathroom, I ditched the traditional towel bars and hung my towels on matte black hooks on the wall for ease and a visual effect.

I am still slowly getting through finishing each room in my modern bohemian home. I will continue to share as I go, but until then thanks for following along! For more information about our design services contact us at info@sbsdesignla.com.
