It’s the end of the month, and we are extremely grateful for all of the design challenges and experiences that have come our way. Today, we continue to show you some of our favorites … 5 things that truly made us happy in the great big world of design this month. This has proven to be a great way for us to share sneak peeks into projects that are in the works (but not quite ready to show in their entirety), flashbacks of projects from the past, and highlight an interior or event vendor that deserves recognition. Enjoy!

#1: This greenery! We are by no means #plantladies, but we really have become obsessed with wanting to add more greenery into our homes. This is a mash up of two plants we each have our eye on at the moment (Tami on the right, Lauren on the left). Take a guess at which rooms we plan for these to go in.

#2: This bling! This eleven foot beauty that my clients ended up purchasing for their formal living room is going to be installed hopefully in the next month. It’s absolutely magnificent, and I can’t wait to see it in the space. It gives you a feel for how over the top the entire design is going to be. (Written by: Lauren)

#3: This vignette! I’ve been working on my house one room at a time and am excited to start the little entry space by my front door. I couldn’t love this vignette and all of the details in it more. I think I will just have to use it as my inspiration. Stay tuned! (Written by: Lauren)

#4: This vendor! As we mentioned in our last post, Modern With Antiques Powder Bathroom Update, we have been working with an incredible company for all of our marble and stone fabrication. Sistone did such a great job on my house, and the work they are doing at my client’s high end condo in Encino is nothing short of incredible! The next room to get installed is the master bathroom, and when you have marble slabs going in like this, you know it is sure to turn out amazing. (Written by: Lauren)

#5: This theme! If you have little girls in your house, you may know of the new fad called “LOL’s”. My daughter is so obsessed and even requested an LOL themed birthday party this year. What’s a mom to do but plan the best LOL birthday party you can? Ava was smart in asking her Aunt Tami to help with this great feat. We are just getting started as Ava’s birthday is still two months away but are giving you just a little teaser at what we have planned with this inspiration photo. (Written by: Lauren)

We plan to share our “Favorite Five” for the month of May on the 25th, and of course will be sharing what’s inspiring us for the month ahead on the first Friday of the month. See ya soon!

Sometimes when you are working on a space, the design evolves over time and you wind up with a slightly different look than you started out with. For this particular project, we have been working on the design and construction of this home for over a year now and we’ve tweaked things here and there as we’ve gone along in order to stay current and give each space the best design we can possibly give. I am over the moon excited this week as the marble has gone up in the powder bathroom in our client’s Modern With Antiques home and I am starting to see my design come to life. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to work on the construction and planning phases as well but nothing quite compares to the feeling you get when the major design elements start to go up. I just couldn’t wait any longer to post about this space, so I hope you won’t mind a little sneak peek and an update at this time.

Powder Bathroom Inspiration

The main inspiration pictures on the powder bathroom board stayed the same (as seen on our previous post, Under Construction: Modern With Antiques Powder Bathroom), but some of the major and minor details have changed. First of all, when we took out the coat closet that was behind this space, we realized we had enough room to put the toilet on the back wall. Thus giving us a larger and more dramatic space to put the sink. We knew that the marble we selected for the walls was going to be quite the statement but also maybe a little busy. So we decided to tone down the other elements in the room and wound up ordering this gorgeous yet simple sink and faucet and opted to include an inset mirror instead of a framed option. We did however want to add just a little more bling and decided to use these crystal sconces to achieve that goal. I feel so giddy getting to finally see this powder bathroom I designed so long ago finally come to life. I mean, you should have seen me picking up the wall mounted toilet flusher from the plater that I had plated in gold … I don’t think anyone should ever get that excited about a toilet flusher!

In Process

Working with Sistone on the marble fabrication has been a dream. They are so easy to work with, so professional, and create these incredible drawings beforehand where they actually scan the images of the marble you purchased and superimpose them into the drawings so you can see how the slabs meet up to decide how you want them laid out. Here are the drawings we approved …

… and here is how it looks in real life.

I absolutely love how this seam turned out where the two slabs of marble match up.

This is the frame that goes around the mirror over the sink. It will create a built in backsplash for the sink as well.

It might take a little time before we get this finished room up on the blog, but we hope you are just as excited as we are to see how it turns out. For more information on our design services email us at

I am so excited to share this beautiful photo shoot that Phil and I worked on with our friend Erica of Erica Leigh Photography. Side by Side Design has been really lucky to have worked with her in the past (as seen on our previous posts for Lauren’s daughter Ava’s newborn photo shoot and one more for her twins). It was very important to Phil and I that we capture memories of our daughter at her tiniest and have baby pictures to look back on fondly as she grows up. We loved Erica’s work so much that she was the obvious choice to take Joie’s newborn photos. Here are some of our favorites from our family photo shoot as well as one that is a special ode to Joie’s oldest cousin and one that will give a sneak peek into her beautifully designed nursery. Enjoy!

Thanks again Erica, our friend and fellow twin, for taking these beautiful photos. I can’t wait to get some framed and display them in our home! If you are looking for a fabulous photographer to take photos of your newborn or family, we have an awesome recommendation for you!

Here’s a hint at what’s to come … Stay tuned to see the full photos of Joie’s LA inspired nursery soon!

In our Pining For Pinterest posts, we prepare our readers for the upcoming season with interior shots alongside decor and event details in a fresh, new color story and overall look. We don’t know about you, but we are so excited that Spring has sprung … The sun is out, the flowers are blooming, and dining outdoors is officially in season! We are loving every minute of it! Please enjoy as we take you through our inspiration for two totally different Spring events in our own distinct styles.

Tami’s Pins: What’s “pin”spiring me this season? My signature colors … Black and white! This inspiration is what I call “Mama’s first Mother’s Day” (and I wish it was mine). It’s a bit organic in color, a bit boho (like me), and a bit fancy while not fussy or over the top. Mama gets treated to all of her favorite things; brunch, fresh florals, something sweet, and a new bag or pair of shoes. What’s most important though (and her favorite part of the day) is spending time with her new little one who made her a mom in the first place.

I would never leave the entry of my home if it looked this good!

Does this rug look familiar? I love black and white!

These palm leaves are giving me and this table so much life! What a perfect brunch location.

Moms should always get a fresh bouquet of their favorite flower on such a special day.

She’s looking so boho chic!

These shoes are polished to perfection.

Mojitos mid-day! Yes please!

Finishing off the perfect day with a slice of chocolate cake …

… and one more surprise!

Lauren’s Pins: What’s “pin”spiring me this season? The Pantone Color of the Year! Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a huge fan of bright bold colors, but I can always get around the idea of pops of something regal here and there. When done right it can really add that extra bit of spunk to an interior space or event. I certainly wouldn’t paint the walls in my own home this hue, but thought the ultra violet color of the year was too fun not to share.

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018 is ultra violet. I love the blue undertones in this deep hue of purple and how they didn’t go too far out of the Crayola marker pack. Simplicity is key!

It’s definitely a bold move to upholster your living room sofa in this color choice, but I think this designer did it just right in this otherwise monochromatic space.

I picture this as a bedroom sitting area. I love how feminine it is and how they mixed in ultra modern pieces with some fun antiques.

When you have this grand of a house, it’s still fun to go a bit casual when entertaining outside this time of year. Sometimes a simple charcuterie plate and some festive jam in this year’s color is all you really need.

The hostess is going casual in her attire as well.

Can you believe she even has this purse in her collection? How cool is she?

A berry cocktail keeps her guests refreshed …

… and this acai flavored cake is everything … So LA!

These fans are the perfect finishing touch as a party favor and a way to keep her guests cool. It was in the 90’s here this week after all!

This season is already a busy one, and we are so excited to continue bringing the events “Side” of our business to the next level. We look forward to all that is coming up this Spring and hopefully using some of this inspiration in our own planning. We would love to work with you in creating the right look this season by tying in the inspiration of your event with the essence of your home decor. Contact us at for more information.
