I think Ava is just as excited as I am for her to go back to school tomorrow! It’s always fun to start a new year in a newly renovated space. We already got a sneak peek at how the school turned out last Friday when we went back for “Meet the Teachers”. Ava and I went a little early and took some pictures of the finished product. I couldn’t be more proud! All of the teachers really worked hard to make their spaces look incredible and decluttered (all while using as many natural materials they could get their hands on). Take a look at how it all turned out (and for before photos check out last week’s post here):

Front Desk – No more bright colors or cheap plastic rings! The new look is clean, crisp, organic, and sets the tone for the rest of the school.

Bathroom – This adult bathroom got a fresh coat of paint and a whole new look.

Zebras and Giraffes – These three year olds will enjoy their new classrooms complete with wooden seating areas, burlap bulletin boards, and each with a crisp green wall. I love that the teachers added live plants to their spaces and the plush giraffe is so much fun!

Butterflies – This room has a good start with the new glass enclosure that was built to close off the bathroom from this space and a fresh coat of paint. We have another week until our little butterflies begin, and I can’t wait to see how their teachers finish this space.

Hallway – The new cabinetry in the hallway gives the school lots of storage space and there are so many options for what to do with the open shelving above. I’ve heard rumors that they might even use it to showcase an art gallery of pieces made by our little ones. What a great idea!

Monkeys and Bears – These two year olds will feel right at home in their cozy classrooms. With perfect reading nooks and music corners they will learn so many important things this year. We hope they enjoy these new spaces!

Lions – This has always been the classroom for the oldest students. The new paint job really helped freshen things up, and I absolutely love what Rob Shamsi did with the stage. The new wood border really makes it look finished. The Lions teachers added lots of fun natural materials throughout the classroom and their space turned out great!

Tigers – This is the first year that the school has two Pre-K classes. The administration opted to give the second class the old Butterfly room. I heard from the teachers that it was not a particularly easy space to configure, but I will say they did an amazing job and the room turned out great! I especially love the reading corner they put together, the new cubbies with the live tree, and the “Roar Call” sign for kids to check in when they arrive.

This will be Ava’s classroom this year, and she is beyond excited!

As we’ve mentioned, the school’s fundraising money as well as money donated by the synagogue was used this Summer for small renovation changes as well as a full paint job of the entire school, a complete set of wooden chairs for each classroom, and some new furniture and toys throughout. I am personally hoping we will be able to raise enough money to complete this project as soon as possible as I can’t wait to see how it looks with new wood flooring throughout and new rugs too. This is, however, a great start and the team that worked on it gave it their all including Rob Shamsi, Allison Schwartz, Kevin Lowe, and all of the administration and staff at the University Synagogue ECLC. Happy First Day of School to my little Tiger and all of her friends! I hope you enjoy your newly renovated space!

We are so excited to once again share our monthly inspiration with all of you! Each month, we look forward to getting the chance to sit down and really think about what’s inspiring us, make predictions for the month ahead, and reflect on the past month. As usual, we have each selected a photo that represents our overall inspiration and have paired it with two interior shots and two events that coordinate with its color scheme and overall concept. In addition, we have provided you with our designer tips to keep you on trend for the month ahead.

Tami’s inspired: It’s crazy to think that a year ago at this time I was gearing up for one of the biggest days of my life! Where has the time gone? I feel as if I have been busy busy moving, working, and just generally running around ever since with very few breaks. So, when my husband, Phil, mentioned getting away for a few days to celebrate our upcoming first anniversary … I said “YES!” (again). San Francisco here we come!

What’s my designer tip this month? Give yourself a little “San Francisco treat”! This city is known for its delicious restaurants (especially seafood), lively bars, and landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s where all this color in my inspiration board comes from. Bring these ocean tones and bright pops of red into your home and event spaces this month in San Francisco’s honor. I’m especially obsessed with this higher than high plush teal headboard, the cool Asian inspired rug (Love me some China Town!), and the over-the-top way these tables are decorated for a wedding reception.

Lauren’s inspired: You’ve all seen in our previous post, Under Construction: Back to School Renovation, that Ava’s school is getting a fresh new look. On Monday, we are going to share the final product (Which I just saw BTW, and it looks incredible!), and Tuesday, Ava starts school. She is going to be a “Big Tiger” in the Pre-K class. You may be thinking that a tiger and a butterfly are not the most common of pairings, but as my two little ones spread their wings and begin their journey at the same school (in the Mommy and Me “Butterfly” class), we start the cycle all over again. What a big month!

What’s my designer tip this month? Mix old and new! A traditional bed with modern night tables looks right at home when you mix different styles into your accessories. Pairing prints that you wouldn’t normally expect can look elegant when done right. These event spaces nailed this concept! When you mix over-sized terracotta planters and over-the-top crystal chandeliers with modern ghost chairs, you get a wedding ceremony worth talking about.

Here at Side by Side Design, we look forward to an exciting month including all Lauren’s girls going to (and back to) school as well as a look at the final renovation at their preschool, a special trip to San Francisco and a look at how Tami and Phil celebrated their first anniversary, a really fun at-home event (This one’s top secret … Can’t say what for quite yet!), and some inspiration for the New Year! Don’t forget to check out our next Get Inspired post on October 6th for all new looks and inspiration!
