Each month (in our “Get Inspired” post) we select a photo that represents our overall inspiration and pair it with two interior shots and two events that coordinate with its color scheme and overall concept. This particular series has been a favorite among our readers. It is also one we consistently look forward to writing as it allows us an opportunity to reflect on the past month and make predictions for the month ahead. We have mentioned previously that one thing we have noticed is that our readers often comment that they love our inspiration boards, but are not sure from where to get similar items. We always like to take reader feedback into account and figured that this makes perfect sense. We decided to give our readers a closer look at something that is inspiring us, providing further information for where to purchase similar items and their range of prices (from super affordable to fancy and one of a kind).

This month, Tami is in a music kind of mood (as seen in her inspiration board in our Get Inspired: May post) and is working on creating a list of the best dance songs for her wedding day. In her every day life, she takes many opportunities to incorporate music  whether it be rocking out in the car, or a soft tune while cooking dinner at home, and of course no event is complete without it. For those of you who also love music, this one’s for you! We have prepared a list of five interior items and five items you can use in your own events that go along with our May theme … Records and Retro. We have also included a link for each item for your convenience in obtaining them. Enjoy!

Today is #FlashbackFridays, and as it is now the month that “brings flowers”, we are thinking back on all of the flower arrangements we have created and / or written about over the years. For today’s post, we decided to share the “favorite five” with all of you. In order to determine what five photos have gotten the most “likes”, we went back and looked through our Pinterest boards. We were excited by what we found and to say we were surprised is an understatement.

#5: As seen in our post, A 50th Birthday Party – We woke up early one Saturday morning in September to go to the Los Angeles Flower Mart. Gorgeous roses and other types of garden flowers in blush tones were complimented nicely when paired with soft, plush greenery. We took all of our purchases home and rearranged them in glass vases to make beautiful centerpieces for each of the tables at a special 50th birthday party.

#4: As seen in our post, Wedding Reception – The centerpieces at this gorgeous White Wedding consisted of large antique square mirrors, with a single vase of white hydrangeas and roses surrounded by different heights of floating candles, tea lights, and beautiful handmade table numbers. This, for us, is true perfection!

#3: Also seen in our post, A 50th Birthday Party – Our Pinterest followers must really love these flower arrangements for them to make not one but two appearances in our top five! We love how they are paired with antique glass candle holders and framed photos of the birthday girl as an eclectic centerpiece for each table.

#2: As seen in our post, Vintage Rustic Wedding Reception – Each round table at this Vintage Rustic Wedding was set with a centerpiece of candles in mason jars, wild flower arrangements created by the organic flower farmers themselves, and brass table numbers on a wooden plank. We love how it turned out!

… and the #1 most pinned pic: As seen in our post, Wedding Ceremony – We were not so surprised to find that you loved this photo, but we were overwhelmed by the amount of you who have repinned it! In fact, thousands of you are saving it for a rainy day (Maybe even a wedding of your own!). Over-sized black satin ribbon adds glamour to these simple white rose Bridesmaid bouquets. Here’s something you might not know … Tami held one of these gorgeous flower arrangements at Lauren’s wedding almost five years ago.

Hopefully this May will bring the flowers! You may have to do a bit of arranging (or purchasing if that’s more your style) yourself. As always, we are extremely grateful for the feedback our readers have provided us. When this particular client purchased this adorable home in Westwood, they loved it for the charm each room already possessed. I am sure that the clean white walls, wooden beams, high ceilings, built-ins, and brick fireplace in the front living room were major selling features, and all of the natural light that this room gets doesn’t hurt either. When they asked me to help them find furniture to finish this space, I knew I wanted to enhance these details but not distract from them and add a little whimsy to the room as well.

Although this is the formal living room, this family of four wanted it to be comfortable for their guests to hang out in but not a dedicated play space for the kids. They also didn’t want it to be too formal or stuffy. We went with a layout that brought this whole feeling together and a few pieces that kept the room young and fun.

I was dead set on a cognac leather sofa for this space and just love how it turned out. The vintage feel of this West Elm selection looks great, and I love how the fun pillows  pop against it.

The couple had this beautiful art piece which was the perfect fit for this wall.

Interesting pieces such as these wire frame chairs, geometric mirrored side tables and the cool round mirror above the fireplace add a quirkiness to the space …

… but the real showstopper is this blue velvet chair. The whole room was designed around it, and it really gives the room a true American feeling.

With such fun pieces the room really could stand to stay simple. We left the white paint and white draperies alone and added in this awesome gray gradient rug also from West Elm. This helped to make the fireplace stand out and kept the room looking clean and put together. I was lucky enough to also help with the design in the master bedroom and den for this home. We are putting the finishing touches on those spaces, and we will share them as soon as they are ready. Stay tuned for more from this American Whimsy home tour soon.

Last week, I shared some really special photos with all of you (as seen in our post, Engagement Photo Shoot Part 1). I also promised that the next wedding preparation I would showcase would be how we turned these gorgeous photos into our Save the Dates. Well, here they are! I can truly say that after all of the photo shoot planning, guest list deciding, address compiling, and stationary designing, I am extremely pleased with how they turned out. Of course, I can’t take all of the credit. As I have already mentioned, it took a really special team of creative individuals to pull off the photos and I have my friends at Minted to thank for awesome looking cards that went out to all of our guests.

I knew from the very beginning of this process that there were a few things that were very important to me. Let’s be honest … I am pretty picky and as an event planner and Bride, want things to look just so. I wanted to bring a casual feel to our Save the Dates to match my fiancee and my personalities but with an elegance that will hint at the feel of  what we plan to achieve for our wedding. We chose a mostly casual look for this particular photo and included a gorgeous floral crown in a stunning setting. I purchased a custom stamp from Etsy to aid in return addressing all of our outgoing mail. Tip: We chose not to use our last names on the stamp as mine will be changing soon and we can therefore use it past our wedding date.

Gold foil! Minted has so many amazing options for wedding stationary (Save the Dates, Invitations, Thank You Cards, etc.), but I just cannot imagine choosing not to go with one of their foil options. This gold script added the glamour we were hoping to achieve and says exactly what we want it to … that this is “our” date that our guests should hold on to. So personal, I love it! We also included our first names, our wedding date (obviously), and the city where we will wed.

You can see our custom stamp in action in these photos. They made our Save the Dates so personal and fun! We also were happy to take Minted up on their option for complimentary printed addressing. This made each envelope look finished and made our preparation so much easier.

Every last detail was thought out down to the postage stamp. I chose these floral Forever stamps for their fun and lighthearted nature. I love the fact that they came in a variety of designs making each envelope unique and special.

I cannot express enough how much I highly recommend using Minted for Save the Dates and any other printed materials (Birth Announcements, Birthday Invites, Family Holiday Cards, etc.).  I love how our “Save Our Dates” turned out and can’t wait to partner with this company again in a few months to create our wedding invitations. Don’t worry … I will be sure to share what I have in mind soon.

We are so excited to once again share our monthly inspiration with all of you! Each month, we look forward to getting the chance to sit down and really think about what’s inspiring us, make predictions for the month ahead, and reflect on the past month. As usual, we have each selected a photo that represents our overall inspiration and have paired it with two interior shots and two events that coordinate with its color scheme and overall concept. In addition, we have provided you with our designer tips to keep you on trend for the month ahead.

Tami’s inspired: Do you recognize my inspiration image? It happens to be a screen shot from my current favorite dance song’s music video … Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”, and this May I happen to be in a music kind of mood. My big wedding planning focus this month is on creating an ongoing list of songs from my past and present that we can’t dance without on that fateful day in September. Add to this … finalizing my dress details, selecting rentals to use in our reception space, researching local dessert shops to find just the right confections, and writing the official day of timeline to keep everyone involved on schedule. Sound like a lot? We will get it all done. Don’t believe me? Just watch!! Hey, do me a favor … comment below with your favorite dance song. Can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

May 7

What’s my designer tip this month? Let the music move you! It’s time to switch things up in the design department. Is your home color scheme pretty monochromatic? I know adding in a pink couch is pretty extreme, but it’s time to think outside the box. Usually set your table with safe white linens? Try a pattern. Better yet, try more than one! Usually drink red wine? Why not indulge in a frozen margarita in honor of Cinco de Mayo? Just watch … you’ll love the outcome!

Lauren’s inspired: April showers brings May flowers, and this May brings a special Mother’s Day with my three little girls, some fun design projects, lots of birthday parties, a night out with a group of friends, and lots of wedding planning with my sister. As you can see this month is all about balance, and I am hoping to find a few minutes in there for myself as well.

may 8

What’s my designer tip this month? Find balance in your home as well! Use symmetry to anchor your room and create a space that is evenly distributed. Creating two focal points in a room such as an over-the-top bed and a brightly colored velvet sofa gives balance to each side of the space. In your table design, high centerpieces with fullness balances out all of the place settings and table decor that usually draws the eyes down. However you find your balance, make sure it stays true to your style.

Here at Side by Side Design, we look forward to an exciting month including a celebration of all the mothers in our lives, lots of fresh florals, and all new looks at some brand new interior projects we have had in the works. Don’t forget to check out our next Get Inspired post on June 3rd for all new looks and inspiration!
