In our previous post, Under Construction: Eclectic Zen Courtyard, we shared another outdoor space in this Eclectic Zen home. Since its completion, this family has been able to enjoy entertaining in the space and has loved the new way they are able to use it. As this family is now planning an out of state move, we know that this updated space will be one that the new homeowners are sure to enjoy.

If you remember from our Under Construction post, this is a unique space. It is completely enclosed by different rooms of the house but open on top (meaning there is no roof). The walls are two-stories tall and so is the fireplace chimney. With that said, in designing this space, we had to consider the design of all of the surrounding rooms and a color palette that would tie in nicely. We decided to keep this room very neutral and a little bit formal. The unique details speak for themselves.

Lauren worked with her client to select this gorgeous stone. They absolutely loved its mitered edges giving the fireplace a more contemporary feel. The gray and khaki coloring is accented nicely by the wall behind. A solid piece of slab was used for the seat and a rustic wood mantle helped to give this fireplace a clean and put together look. To finish off the statement wall, Lauren ordered two modern sconces and had a piece of art (that this couple had been holding onto) hung in the center where the chimney meets the roof line for a nice personal touch.

The old concrete flooring had extremely deep grout lines and lots of open spaces. It was nearly impossible to keep clean. We decided to go with a sleeker look and selected this gorgeous dark gray stone tile. We have bordered the outside area and shortened the steps to fit within the border. Then we added a small detail in a lighter tone to make the flooring design interesting.

For the remaining walls, we kept the paint colors very neutral and opted to stay with the main exterior color. We went with a dark green for the doors and window frames to tie everything together. We also used the smaller version of the fireplace sconces on the surrounding walls to keep everything simple and consistent … and the star of the show is this incredible pool table! It is made for the outdoors and can stand anything the California weather has to offer. Even the fabric on top is weather proof.

As we work on a home design, our love for the project grows more and more … we feel a connection to the home just as we do the client. Although this is an end for their time in this special place, this family is moving on to a great new location that they are sure to embrace and enjoy to its fullest. We will miss them very much and hope to see them soon, but for now we bid a farewell and good luck.

green 21

As tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, we thought it would be great to design a “green” event in every sense of the word. The overall look for this beautiful at home event is natural, has hints of the leprechaun’s favorite color, and has been created in an eco-friendly way.

green 27

This inspiration picture captures exactly what we would want to achieve if we were to create this event in a real life setting. The floral arrangements, the furniture, and even the wine all have one major thing in common … they are all organic! For fabric napkins, this company is local (Los Angeles) and you can rent eco-friendly linens.

green 26

Recycled glass bottles or even old medicine bottles in different heights would be great for these small flower arrangements. A little foraging is in order when creating them as well to get this look down right and not be wasteful.

green 28

We love the look of these glass candle holders and love them even more when a sprig of pine is wrapped around each one. What a beautiful finishing touch to your table set up.

green 22

green 24

Reclaimed wood is used for this awesome candle holder as well as the tables themselves. Many local furniture companies (both for purchase and for rent) include reclaimed options.

green 25

Why not include organic wine into your event menu? We decided to showcase Frog’s Leap as our wine of choice because it is not only great for those health conscious guests who live their lives in an organic way, but it is made right here in California.

green 23

What else is on the menu? Well, as this is a made up party, we don’t want to make you too excited for a bunch of foods that you won’t be able to enjoy, but we still wanted to give a hint as to what would be served. This Spring asparagus salad looks to die for!

We hope you have enjoyed this inspiration post full of “green” materials and ideas. We learned a lot while preparing it for you and believe a lot of these eco-friendly details can be incorporated into your own at home event. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Side by Side Design.

It’s Friday! Time for one of our favorite things … food! This week, we decided to try and make one of our restaurant favorites from the comfort of our own home. This pad thai recipe was one that was found on Pinterest and was overall pretty easy to follow. It was said to be “the best pad thai recipe” by the person who pinned it, and we agree it was pretty awesome! To make your own pad thai at home just follow these step by step directions:

1. To make the sauce, heat 1/2 cup tamarind paste, 1/2 cup fish sauce, and 1/3 cup brown sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in 1 tablespoon chili powder (or less if you don’t like it spicy) and bring to a simmer. Turn off the heat once simmering and cover to keep warm.

2. Heat 2 – 3 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan. Add 4 ounces of chicken and stir fry on high until halfway cooked. Add 1 – 2 tablespoons of sauce and a pinch of garlic.

3. Stir and add 4 cups of loosely packed rice noodles and 1/4 cup sauce to the pan. Mix vigorously until the noodles soften. If at any point the noodles dry out, you can always add water.

4. Push the noodles aside and crack 2 eggs into the pan. Let the egg cook for 10 seconds and mix the noodles and egg together.

5. Add 12 shrimp, 2 tablespoons ground peanuts, and chopped scallions into the pan. Stir fry all together until the shrimp are cooked (This will only take about a minute). Remove from heat.

6. Garnish with sprouts, more peanuts, and / or lime wedges and enjoy!

Las Vegas … a place we know and love! In fact, we wrote about this particular location in a previous travel post including a friend’s 30th birthday. We usually visit this spot about once a year. Therefore, we feel completely comfortable guiding those less familiar towards a fabulous stay in this city, and as we have both been there recently, our minds are fresh on this topic. We have broken this post into three parts that we feel encompass all of your travel needs should you consider visiting Las Vegas (or any other location). After all, what else is there besides a great place to stay, what to do and see, and delicious things to eat? Here are our recommendations broken down into our two separate trips.

T Side: A new couple’s romantic getaway … and it just so happens that a few of our friends were planning to go to the same location at the same time. What a blast we had in Vegas #jewsonchristmas !

Where to Stay

las vegas 23

The Signature at MGM Grand is the perfect place to stay and is found just off the strip. This suite was cozy, spacious, and had a great view!

What to Do / See

las vegas 20

las vegas 22

The High Roller is not your average Ferris wheel. It is the world’s largest observation wheel at 550 feet tall. Not to mention our cab had an open bar for the entire 30 minutes of our ride … only in Vegas!

las vegas 21

Hakkasan Nightclub in the MGM was the perfect way to get a full Vegas experience … while in Vegas we must dance!

las vegas 19

My favorite stop on any Vegas tour is the Bellagio garden. I love experiencing the seasons through their decor and fragrant flowers.

Where to Eat

las vegas 17

Our first dinner was enjoyed at Sushi Samba. The ambiance was spectacular and this sushi roll was delicious when topped with foie gras and gold leaf.

las vegas 16

I highly recommend Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace! Their burgers, fries, and signature sauces were all perfection!

las vegas 14

We went to Lavo for dinner the second night. I so enjoyed my spicy seafood linguine, but I enjoyed spending time with my college friend Sarah who lives in Vegas even more!

las vegas 18

All of our meals during this trip were amazing, but the Caesar’s buffet took the cake! Everything and anything you could want from a buffet was there and all of top quality … fresh mussels and crab legs, dumplings and other Asian delicacies, and even charcuterie just to name a few.

L Side: Lucky for me I got to tag along on my husband’s business trip. It was so fun being entertained the whole time. It sure made this quick trip (only 24 hours) feel much longer.

Where to Stay

las vegas 1

Our amazing suite in the Wynn hotel just off the strip features a bright fresh design and lots of fun amenities such as extra toiletries, dual sinks, and a 13 inch LCD TV … and that’s just in the bathroom!

What to Do / See

las vegas 2

Many celebs go to Vegas … We saw some of our favorites at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, and the main social event for the weekend was held here. We enjoyed passed appetizers and food / dessert stations.

las vegas 3

The Le Reve show by Cirque Du Soleil was incredible. Go see it! I am still trying to figure out how they do all those tricks underwater.

las vegas 5

las vegas 4

We took a helicopter tour of the strip and Red Rock as well. We highly recommend this experience!

las vegas 6

las vegas 7

The garden at the Wynn was also beautiful. I love to see what designs they come up with.

Where to Eat

las vegas 9

We had a few rolls at the sushi bar at Mizumi in between shows, and they were fabulous.

las vegas 10

las vegas 11

The next morning we enjoyed breakfast at Tableau (also in the Wynn). I recommend sitting outside … such a gorgeous view at the pool area.

las vegas 12

We also ate at Sushi Samba! I guess great minds think alike.

We hope you have enjoyed these tips and will consider using them the next time you visit Las Vegas! We feel so lucky to each have been able to get away for a few days and loved sharing our experiences with each other as well upon our returns. Maybe next time we will travel Side by Side.

We were so excited when one of our favorite online home decor retailers, One Kings Lane, approached us about being a part of the blogger campaign series they are launching called Fashion-Forward Furniture in honor of Fashion Week. This series celebrates personal style as they believe “that filling your home with pieces you love makes as much a style statement as the outfits you pull together every morning”. They also say that, “just like creating an outfit, one way to craft a perfectly styled room is to pick a statement piece and design around it,” which is a philosophy that we use in our own designs as well. Thus One Kings Lane started their “Head Over Heels for Chaises” feature.

The challenge was this: “With their glam vibes and architectural silhouettes, chaises are one of the ultimate fashion-forward pieces of furniture. These swoon-worthy seats have the ability to make a room, much like a statement shoe can make an outfit. So we’re dying to see how YOU would pair your favorite statement shoes with a chic chaise lounge.” We happily accepted this challenge and came up with seven pairings using all One Kings Lane chaises and the best shoe brand in our opinion … Louboutins!

This overall look is casual yet chic and easily can go from day to night. Here are the chaises that work within this genre:

This overall look is classy and luxurious. We all need a little black and white in our life whether it be on our feet or in our home. Here are the chaises that work within this genre:

We really had a great time putting together this post! It was such a fun way to put together two things we are passionate about. Thank you One Kings Lane for giving us this opportunity. We can’t wait to see how other bloggers take on your Head Over Heels for Chaises challenge!
